Commenting on the latest figures from the Trussell Trust, which show a 15 per cent increase in foodbank use across Scotland compared with the same period last year, Martin Whitfield MP said:

“The Tories’ callous and chaotic rollout of Universal Credit is the main driver for the spiralling growth in the use of foodbanks. In my view, our experience in East Lothian has shown UC is beyond fixing. The rollout should be halted and a fairer, genuinely comprehensive system developed in which nobody will be worse off.

“Foodbanks provide a vital safety net to help people experiencing food poverty. I have seen firsthand what an excellent job

“However, in the short term, the Trussell Trust is absolutely right to call for the reduction in the five week minimum wait for the first UC payment. That is why Labour included it in our 10 point plan for starting to repair the damage caused by UC. The Government needs to act now to prevent more families being pushed into poverty this winter.”
