Martin Whitfield MP has raised concerns about barriers that have potentially restricted the number of EU citiziens living in East Lothian who will be able to exercise their right to vote in the European Parliament elections on 23rd May.
Mr Whitfield challenged Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell over the situation which has seen EU citizens already on the electoral roll required to compete a form to indicate if they will vote here or in their ‘home’ nation.
Martin Whitfied MP said:
“Registration to vote in the EU parliamentary elections has now closed. I’m disappointed that unnecessary barriers and the lack of a full voter registration campaign may have restricted the number of EU citizens able to participate in the elections on 23rd May.
“The government should have done more to ensure that EU citizens do not lose their opportunity to vote and I was pleased to have the chance to question David Mundell on the issue today.”
