Martin Whitfield MP has backed a bid to stop a new prime minister suspending Parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit.

MPs voted by a majority of 41 to approve a crucial amendment that blocks suspension between 9 October and 18 December unless a Northern Ireland executive is formed.

Martin Whitfield MP said:

“I was very pleased to be one of the 315 MPs from across the House who voted for this crucial amendment.

“The vote is an important victory and makes it unlawful for Boris Johnson and the Tories to try and suspend Parliament in order to force through a destructive no-deal Brexit.

“As long as Parliament remains deadlocked, the only viable democratic option is to return the final say on Brexit to the public.”
