Martin Whitfield MP attended and spoke at yesterday evening’s One World Night event hosted by Longniddry Parish Church.

The subject for the evening was the plight of women, men and children from around the world who become refugees, asylum seekers or trafficked people.

The discussion was led by Dr Sabir Zazai, Chief Executive of the Scottish Refugee Council who came to the UK as a refugee himself some 20 years ago and has campaigned for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers since then.

It also included contributions from pupils at Longniddry Primary School who asked participants to think about what it would be like to have to leave home at very short notice and only a few possessions.

Speaking after the event, Martin Whitfield MP said:

“The One World Night was a really interesting and thought-provoking event which provided a platform for discussing the plight of refugees, asylum seekers and trafficked people.

“Sabir Zazai’s contribution was particularly moving and powerful and I am grateful to him for his contribution. The senior pupils were also brilliant and gave us all serious food for thought.

“Many thanks to everyone at Longniddry Parish Church involved in organising the event and all those who attended for making it such a fascinating and positive night.”
